Thomas Leigh

Keyboardist and percussionist, Gaelic language teacher

Thomas grew up in Newton, Massachusetts. He has long been fascinated by electronic musical technology, and has been programming and playing synthesizers and drum machines for over 12 years. He also loves percussion and plays several different drums and other percussion instruments.

Apart from music, Thomas’ other passion is for languages. His love of the Celtic languages, as well as his interest in his heritage, led Thomas to get his degree in Gaelic Studies at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, where he lived for 4 years. During that time, he frequently associated with young Gaels, many of whom lamented the dearth of modern pop and dance music in their own language. Thomas therefore resolved that one of his musical goals would be to create electronic pop music in Scottish Gaelic and the other five Celtic languages. Thomas also indulged his love of percussion in Aberdeen, playing for two years with the five-member street percussion group Hypertribe.

In the fall of 1998, after returning from Aberdeen, Thomas met Maggie Carchrie, and soon after, they began performing together and Thomas started teaching Gaelic language classes through Maggie’s school, the Callanish School of Celtic Arts. Thomas and Maggie released the album Rù-Rà in the summer of 2000, and were married in September.

In 2002, Thomas took up the Scottish bagpipes. He played with the Colum Cille Pipes and Drums of Cape Cod Bay from 2002–2005, and currently plays with the Manchester Regional Police and Fire Pipe Band in Connecticut.
